Powerful tornadoes caused devastation in several communities across the South Friday night, killing at least 25 people in Mississippi.
Damage was widespread in the Humphreys County town of Silver City and the Sharkey County town of Rolling Fork. More than a dozen of the victims were in Sharkey County, and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said dozens were injured
Trees and power lines were down and more than 55,000 power outages were being reported in Mississippi and Tennessee combined as of about 12:18 a.m. Saturday, according to PowerOutage.us. This included near-total darkness in the counties where tornado-hit Rolling Fork and Winona, Mississippi, are located.
The tornado was spotted by chasers and radar confirmed that debris was being pulled up to 22,000 feet. This is indicative of an EF3-plus tornado.
The tornado continued northeastward for at least 40 miles to near Silver City, Tchula, Winona, and Amory Mississippi. The storm is part of a line of severe weather moving across parts of the south tonight.
